Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, Protoclassic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A hollow-built pottery figure seated on crossed legs and holding a small gourd-shaped instrument in both sinuous arms. The expressive visage is composed of slit-form eyes, a prominent nose adorned with a nose ring, protruding lips, and tab-shaped ears, all beneath a rounded top wrapped with a slender headband. The figure is accentuated with applied black and red stripes atop a cream-slipped ground, and a solid bar of black pigment indicative of tattooing covers the eyes. Size: 3.125" L x 3.625" W x 5.5" H (7.9 cm x 9.2 cm x 14 cm); 6.25" H (15.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Small nicks and abrasions to base, body, and head, with fading to original pigmentation, and light encrustations within some recessed areas. Light earthen deposits and manganese blooms throughout.
