Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Michoacan, pre-Classic period, ca. 800 BCE to 100 BCE. This rare and very old, circular, squat vessel has a long, flared spout and a high bridge handle. This one is nicely painted with a cream and red geometric motif of what looks like a sun surrounded by stars under the handle, twin serpents below that, and then waves around the shoulder. Size: 10.45" L x 7.4" W x 8.75" H (26.5 cm x 18.8 cm x 22.2 cm)

Vessels like these are sometimes called Tzintzuntzan (or Tzin Tzun Tzan), perhaps in reference to the archaeological site of the same name that ultimately served as the capital of the Tarascan state but which has a long history of settlement, stretching back to the pre-Classic period.

Provenance: Ex-private New York collection; ex-private collection of Morton Schiowitz, Geneva Switzerland then New York acquired in 1960s while living in Switzerland and then by descent to present owner.
