Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Tumaco region, La Tolita, ca. 500 BCE to 500 CE. A fine, hand-built effigy grater (rollador) of an attractive fish form. The ovoid body has a pointed tail, a roughly triangular head with discoid eyes and an incised mouth, and a body inset with dozens of sharp stones. Used to grate various vegetables and to descale fish, effigy graters like this example were utilized in the Tumaco region of what is now Colombia by the Tolita culture. This example displays liberal remains of original red pigment. Size: 11.4" L x 3.625" W (29 cm x 9.2 cm).

  • Condition: Repaired from three large pieces with some restoration, resurfacing, and overpainting along break lines. Minor nicks to body, head, and peripheries, with some fading to original pigmentation. Light earthen deposits and nice traces of original pigmentation throughout.
