Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Central Highlands, Atlantic Watershed, ca. 1000 to 1400 CE. A seated figure carved from volcanic basalt, depicted in a classic squatting position with arms folded upon upraised knees. Rather than a classic Sukia figure, this gent is not smoking. Instead he sits with a contemplative expression, his finely delineated visage comprised of rectangular slit eyes, a protruding nose, closed lips, pronounced rectangular openwork ears, a large forehead, and jutting chin. Though abstract in its rendering, the attention to detail is impressive. Beyond that marvelous face, every finger and toe is defined, and on the back, his shoulder blades and buttocks are delineated as well. A marvelous example. Size: 4" L x 3.75" W x 6.75" H (10.2 cm x 9.5 cm x 17.1 cm)
