Description:

Pre-Columbian, north coast Peru, Chavin, ca. 900 to 400 BCE. A gorgeous bowl carved from light gray-brown stone. The squat vessel features a shallow basin surrounded by smooth walls with a gently flared lip and displayed across the bottom are two incised pairs of conjoined spirals with midsections that stretch across the middle. Bowls like this example were perhaps used for a variety of purposes including votive offering dishes, serving vessels for royals and nobles, or even ritual containers used for gathering blood. Size: 11.5" W x 11.2" H (29.2 cm x 28.4 cm); 14.875" H (37.8 cm) on included custom stand.
