Description:

Greece, Attica, Athens, ca. 186 to 86 BCE. Obverse: Helmeted head of Athena right. Reverse: Greek inscription on either side of owl standing facing on amphora, Dioscuri standing left, to right. "H" on amphora. The "owl" tetradrachms of Athens are probably the most well known of all ancient coins. These Athenian tetradrachms were first struck in 512 BCE. They are without question, one of the most recognizable of all the ancient coins. The design stayed the same for hundreds of years, with the head of Athena facing right on the obverse and an Athenian owl standing on the reverse. While the design never changed over the years, the art style did, resulting in a different appearance for tetradrachms issued at different times. This new "owl" type offered at auction herein, is struck on a larger and thinner flan, and features a "new style" of design that is much more realistic than previous examples. Compare, SNG Cop 268. Size: 1.1" W (2.8 cm); 16.9 grams
