Description:

Ancient Near East, Neo-Assyrian period, ca. 800 to 600 BCE. A stylized white clay head and upper body of the goddess Astarte, depicted here with huge, almond-shaped eyes, a heavy brow line, elaborate coiffure, and a large, round amulet worn on a string of beads around her neck. Astarte (Ashtoreth, Ishtar) was connected with sexuality, war, and fertility. The top of her head has a yannic form and her arms curve upward so that her hands grasp her breasts, a common pose for this goddess. Size: 3.3" W x 4" H (8.4 cm x 10.2 cm); 4.75" H (12.1 cm) on included custom stand.
