Description:

Eastern Africa, Kenya or Tanzania, Maasai peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A collection of beaded adornments made by Maasai or neighboring peoples, including bracelets, "wristwatches," necklaces, and arm cuffs. The materials used are primarily leather covered with glass seed beads, but also feature cotton cloth, shells, buttons, and metal zipper teeth. Beads hold deep cultural significance in Maasai society, symbolizing identity, age, and social status. Traditionally made from seeds and bones, glass beads became prominent after European contact. Beaded jewelry, particularly collars and bracelets, plays a key role in ceremonies such as weddings and rites of passage, with colors carrying specific meanings - red for bravery and white for purity. Size of largest collar: 7" Diameter x 3" W (17.8 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: private Santa Fe, New Mexico USA collection; ex-Ned Jacob Studio collection, acquired from the Maasai in the 1970s
