Description:

Southeast Asia, Vietnam, Annamese, ca. 1500 CE. A milky blue miniature amphora vase. Relatively few Annamese wares may be found in museum collections, as these Southeast Asian ceramics are under-researched. Annamese potteries such as this example display strong Chinese influences, indicative of the sinofied overlay evident in Vietnamese culture. Between the 14th and 17th centuries, the Annam civilisation became the center of extensive ceramic production. Early on, the designs of the Annam ceramics were close to those of Chinese ceramics and porcelain. Later, the Annam civilization developed its own shapes and decorative motifs. Round boxes with lids and utility pieces in the form of animals became synonymous with later Annamese works. This piece appears to be a relatively early example. Size: 2.5" W x 2.5" H (6.4 cm x 6.4 cm)
