Stanley's upcoming article in Scribner's Century literary magazine's Midwinter February issue with a striking illustration featuring the visage of an African male and his sword emerging from foliage below a brilliant sun - in a warm palette of golden yellows and oranges - surrounded by a wintery scene of snow covered evergreens in a contrasting cool palette of blue and white. Some of the most impressive Art Nouveau posters were produced by The Century Company. They commissioned original graphics by masters such as Louis John Rhead, Eugene Grassett, Edward Penfield, and George Wharton Edwards. This poster includes the monogram HML. Sir Henry Morton Stanley (original name John Rowlands, Congolese name Bula Matari meaning 'Breaker of Rock') was a British American explorer of central Africa who is perhaps best known for rescuing the Scottish missionary and explorer David Livingstone as well as his discoveries in the Congo. Stanely was knighted by Queen Victoria in 1899.
