Description:

South America, Argentina, Buenos Aires, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A handsome brass gaucho facon dagger and the original brass sheath, the cylindrical hilt is inlaid with alternating panels of stippled brass and nacre (mother of pearl) shell. The steel blade has an armorial crest and scrolling motif on the heel, and the cutting edge is still sharp. The sheath features a clip on one side in the form of a deer's head with oak leaves for securing to the facon to the gaucho's belt, and a large chape tip with a woman's head in profile. Gauchos considered facons to be more masculine than firearms and were popular for duels of honor, protection, and carried as accessories and symbols of prestige. Size of blade: 8.5" L x 1.125" W (21.6 cm x 2.9 cm); in sheath: 14" L x 1.5" W (35.6 cm x 3.8 cm)
