Description:

Native American, North America, Early to Middle Archaic, 8000 to 5000 BP (3000 to 4000 BCE). A large bannerstone – thought to be a weight used with an atl atl - carved from a single piece of banded slate. The tips flare out forming a double wing shape. The slate is a gray hue with pretty darker veins and a white band running across the surface. The narrow neck had not yet been drilled through the center, and once drilled would have been attached to an atl atl – a spear throwing device used throughout the ancient Americas. For the style, see Knoblock, Bannerstones of the North American Indians, plate 178, images 2 & 3. Size: 6" L x 5" W (15.2 cm x 12.7 cm)

Provenance: private Kansas City, Missouri, USA collection; ex-John Townsend collection, formed in the 1970s and earlier
