Description:

Western Greece, Archaic period, ca. 600 BCE. A hollow, mold-made terracotta head of a kore, a youthful female draped in elegant garments. The stylized head exhibits a serene visage comprised of delicate almond-shaped eyes, a slender nose, flush cheeks, and a smooth brow line, with her mouth presenting a timeless Archaic smile. At one point, the head and remainder of the body were brightly painted. It is not known if kore were meant to represent a deity - perhaps Persephone - or a human woman, but monumental finds indicate that kore were common sights for the Archaic Greeks, both in the public eye and in private. Size: 3.625" W x 4" H (9.2 cm x 10.2 cm).
