Description:

Magna Graecia, South Italy, Apulia, ca. 340 BCE. A lovely red-figured pyxis - a lidded container that was used for storing cosmetics, ointments or trinkets - featuring an elegant swan on the lid. The swan was a creature that played a complex role in Greek mythology. An attribute of Aphrodite and Apollo, the swan was said to sing a song of unearthly beauty as it died, and it was also the form assumed by Zeus to ravish Leda, mother of Helen of Troy. Size (w/ lid): 4.2" W x 2.55" H (10.7 cm x 6.5 cm)
