Description:

Magna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A striking Greek Apulian red-figure askos decorated with two lovely ladies' heads, both depicted in profile and facing the spout on each side of the upper shoulder. The body is adorned with sharp carination and a ring foot, single handle behind the trumpet spout. The upper portion of the body is beautifully decorated with the head of a lady of fashion on either side, palmettes to each side. Askoi were pottery vessels that the ancients used to pour small amounts of precious liquids such as oil. This example displays the characteristic flat shape of an askos, in this case with a spout at one end and a long strap handle. Such a fancifully decorated askos as this would have been used to store oil used to refill oil lamps. A lovely example! Size: 6.5" W x 4.25" H (16.5 cm x 10.8 cm)
