Description:

Mexico or possibly Hispanic New Mexico, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A wonderful folk art retablo, hand-painted on wood, depicting the crucified San Acacio (Saint Acacius) wearing a military uniform with soldiers of a smaller scale below the Cross, "SAN ACACIO" painted across the mound below, and a floral border, all delineated in a palette of red, blue, green, yellow, black, and brown against a creamy white background. On the verso is an informative handwritten contextual historical statement about San Acacio.

According to scholar Gloria Fraser Giffords, "Acacius was a supposed martyr of the second century. After an appearance of an angel, he and his nine thousand Roman soldiers during a campaign to subdue certain Syrian tribes were said to have been converted to Christianity. They retired to Mount Ararat in Armenia and founded a community for the contemplative life. Attempts were made first by the Emperor Hadrian (S.D. 76-138) and then by Antoninus Pius (A.D. 138-61) to return them to military duty. An additional force of one thousand sent to capture them was in turn converted, bringing the complement to ten thousand. After a series of miracles, all of the community were tortured and martyred by beheading, crucifixion, or being thrown over a cliff." (Gloria Fraser Giffords. "Mexican Retablos" - revised edition, 1994, University of New Mexico Press, p. 76)
