Description:

Mexico, ca. 1800 CE. A sweet antique Mexican retablo depicting St. Vincent, known as a powerful preacher able to convert the masses to Catholicism. Icons like these were placed above household altars to venerate the saints (retablo literally means "behind the altar"). The retablo became wildly popular in the 19th century due to the introduction of tin as an affordable medium. Here, St. Vincent is pictured holding a book (indicating his effectiveness as a preacher of the Gospel), with a crucifix emblazoned over his heart (the Crucifix was often used to symbolize the preaching of the Gospel), wearing Dominican robes. Interestingly, St. Vincent is always depicted with wings, a reference to his belief in his angelic role in the book of Revelations. This retablo is finely rendered, the delicate features of Vincent are attractive, and he stands against a backdrop of rolling hills, with the rosy glow of sunrise overtaking the darker blue of the night sky. 6 7/8" x 4-1/2"

  • Condition: Areas of loss, warping, and rust, as is typical with antique tin.
