Description:

Mexico, ca. 19th Century CE. This example depicts St. John Nepomuk, the patron saint of Bohemia, as well as of confessors, lawyers, and bridges. He is also the patron saint of secret keeping, due to the legend of his role as confessor to King Wenceslaus' wife. When the king demanded that St. John reveal his wife's confessions, the saint refused. After torture by rack and fire, John was bound and thrown into the river Moldau, where he was found with seven stars circling his body. Here he is shown in his standard representation, wearing a cassock, biretta, and the detailed lace on the edge of his robe. He contemplates a small crucifix, held in his right hand, and in his left hand is a palm. 10" x 13"
