Description:

Mexico, ca. 19th Century CE. A poignant antique Mexican retablo depicting St. Joseph with the Christ Child. Icons like these were placed above household altars to venerate the saints (retablo literally means "behind the altar"). The retablo became wildly popular in the 19th century due to the introduction of tin as an affordable medium. This retablo presents a tender scene, beautifully painted. St. Joseph cradles the sleeping Christ in his arms, as the Child rests His head on his earthly father's shoulder. The image is cast in a rosy glow, tastefully decorated in pinks and browns. A halo of light emanates from the pair, finishing the beautiful tableau. 13 ¾" x 10"
Provenance: ex-Kelley collection, Colorado.
