Description:

East Asia, Japan, Meiji period, ca. late 19th to early 20th century. A charming figure carved from a wood burl, with just his torso rising from the top. The burl is a natural formation on a tree trunk, and the artist utilized the voluminous quality of the wood to create a figure that appears to be rising from a cloud. The man looks like a sage, with a drooping beard and a wrinkled face, as if he is engaged in deep thought. The wood has developed a dark patina over the years. Size: 3" W x 2.75" H (7.6 cm x 7 cm)

Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection; ex-Arte Primitivo, New York, New York, USA; ex-estate collection of Joe Gerena
