Description:

**Originally Listed At $400**

Europe, England or Germany, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. An advertisement for Liebig Malt Extract created on silk featuring a portrait bust of Justus von Liebig, a 19th century German organic chemist who created a technique for the industrial production of malt as well as meat extracts in his laboratory in Giessen, flanked by garlands of the wheat or barley presumably used in his formulas, against a red ground with a decorative border stating "MALT EXTRACT / LIEBIG" and four floral motifs adorning the corners. Liebig's methodology was used by a British company to create a British tonic wine that contained Liebig's meat extract and was initially called Liebig's Extract of Malt Wine. Liebig Malt Extract was marketed as a digestive remedy to cure all that ails you. It was made in various places including Leipzig, New York, London, and Buenos Aires. Size of textile only: 13" W x 10.75" H (33 cm x 27.3 cm)

This is the only example of this ad that we can find and because of how fragile this would have become over the years, may be one of a few in existence.
