Description:

Western Europe, likely England or possibly the United States, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A cute vessel made from a coconut shell that was hollowed out and polished. The top third of the coconut forms a lid and is attached with a brass hinge. A small brass finial and latch plate with a rivet is connected to the other side of the lid. The European practice of carving coconuts into precious or useful objects began during the 17th to 19th centuries. Itinerant traders, sailors, and prisoners were looking for a means to pass the time and created keepsakes for their loved ones. Coconut made items became an obsession in the Victorian and Edwardian periods, and reflected the worldwide market that consumers in the British Empire drew upon to decorate and furnish their homes. Size: 4" W x 5" H (10.2 cm x 12.7 cm)
