Description:

North America, United States, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A wicked looking iron double-spring foothold trap for a large animal such as a bear or coyote. The mechanism consists of a wide jaw with two springs and a square pan at the center to activate the trap. A drag chain was attached to stake into the ground in order to ensure that the animal did not escape. These traps ensured the animal pelt was intact and unblemished for the fur trade. The cost and efficiency of the traps revolutionized the trapping and fur industry in North America. Size of just jaws: 8.675" L (22 cm); trap: 25" L x 9" W (63.5 cm x 22.9 cm)
