Description:

England, Anglo-Saxon, ca. 450 to 1066 CE. Garnets were one of the most beautiful and popular jewels of the Anglo-Saxon period, and there is evidence for individual garnets being mounted and then re-mounted in different styles of ornamentation throughout the period, including brooches, belt buckles, sword hilts, and rings. Nobility of both sexes would have worn ornamentation with garnets; jewelry containing garnets are also often found in Anglo-Saxon votive deposits, suggesting some form of non-Christian ritual use. Many smaller garnets, like this one, came from the mountains of Bohemia, but some of the larger ones were traded from India via Rome. Size: Chunk measures approximately 3/4" in diameter (2 cm).
