Description:

Vietnam, Dong Son Culture, late 1st millennium BCE. This is a socketed lancehead. The casting technique for Dong Son bronzes was demanding artistically and technically, and it seems likely based on archaeological investigation that they were made by local workshops staffed by specialists. These specialists shared knowledge throughout their geographic region, and socketed axes like this one are constructed similarly to those from the Warring States period in China. Burials from the Dong Son (or Dongson, or Ðông Son) culture, rich in bronze goods, demonstrate a high level of wealth relative to neighboring areas; this lancehead probably ended its functional life accompanying someone to the grave. Size: 10.75" L x 1" W (27.3 cm x 2.5 cm).

Provenance: Ex-Estate of John Piscopo. Mr. Piscopo was one of the largest collectors of ancient weapons in the US with a collection that spanned all cultures, all ages.
