Southeast Asia, Thailand, Ban Chiang, ca. 2100 to 300 BCE. A collection of 4 ancient Thai pottery vessels exhibiting a textile pressed patterning across their bodies. This pottery was made by hand using a paddle and anvil to shape the profile and then incising the cord-marked design, utilizing fibrous materials such as rope, or incised with a stylus, likely made of wood. Ban Chiang is considered by UNESCO to be the most important prehistoric settlement so far found in Southeast Asia with a vibrant pottery tradition split into 3 eras: Early (2100 to 900 BCE, Middle (900 to 300 BCE), and the Late Period (300 BCE to 200 CE). The impressed styles, like the ones seen here usually date to the Early or Middle Periods. Size of largest: 5" Diameter x 5" H (12.7 cm x 12.7 cm)
