Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Southeast Asia, Thailand, Ban Chiang culture, ca. 1st millennium BCE. A round-bodied ceramic jar with a wide, flaring neck and rolled rim. The exterior body and lower neck of the vessel are incised with sinuous, flowing motifs and round spirals containing long, incised marks; the slightly rounded base has an incised texture with crosshatching. Size: 5.4" W x 5.8" H (13.7 cm x 14.7 cm)

Ban Chiang, occupied for thousands of years, was a site inhabited by rice farmers who were skilled in bronze and ceramic production. A low mounded cemetery, when excavated, showed that they buried their dead with an extensive collection of grave goods: bronze axes, jewelry, iron tools, animal and human figurines, and pottery vessels like this one which we believe were manufactured specifically for funerary purposes.
