Ancient Near East, Syria, Tell Brak region, ca. 3500 to 3300 BCE. A white stone (marble or alabaster) carved eye idol of an abstract, flattened form, delineated with incised almond-shaped eyes, arched brows, an ovoid neck, shoulders that slope to a straight-sided body incised with vertical linear and zigzag lines, and a flat base - created in the ancient region of Tell Brak (Nagar, Nawar). Idols like this example were used for dedication to an all-seeing deity who watched over the peoples of Mesopotamia. During what is known as period F of this region (ca. 3800 to 3600 BCE), a temple was erected, and this temple has been dubbed the Eye Temple for the thousands of small Eye Idols discovered within it.
