Ancient Near East, The Levant, Syro-Hittite culture, ca. 2nd millennium BCE. A hand-built pottery idol fragment depicting the upper torso of Astarte, goddess of war and fertility. Astarte presents holding her breasts below a massive pectoral collar, and above is an abstract, avian-form face exhibiting impressed eyes and a stippled coiffure that cascades down to her shoulders. Size: 1.2" L x 1.8" W x 2.9" H (3 cm x 4.6 cm x 7.4 cm)

  • Condition: Fragment from a larger figure with losses to lower half as shown. Loss to nose and proper right arm. Repair to area along proper right side, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Great preservation to overall idol form.
