Description:

Ancient Near East, Syrian Provincial, ca. 3rd millennium BCE. A hand-carved stone stamp seal of a rectangular form exhibiting dark brown and nearly black hues. Perforated through the body for suspension, the convex seal features abstract zoomorphic motifs on each side. One side bears the image of a right-facing ungulate, perhaps an ibex, with a curled tail and a raised head with a pair of backswept horns. The opposite side showcases a segmented, left-facing serpent with an open mouth quarreling with a flying bird. Custom putty impression included. Size: 1.25" L x 1.1" W (3.2 cm x 2.8 cm); 2.2" H (5.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Zaveloff collection, Lakewood, New Jersey, USA, acquired from Venus Gallery, Israel, in 2002
