Description:

Ancient Near East, Syria, ca. 2nd millennium BCE. This is a really fantastic, wide example of one of the most distinctive cast bronze forms from the ancient Near East. It is the "duckbill" design, created by two ovoid openings near the shaft. This is in the style of axe heads from Hazor, which is described in the Book of Joshua as the head of the Canaanite city-states, and the site of one of Joshua's most important victories in the Israelites conquest of the Promised Land. Archaeological expeditions from 1955 to 1958 revealed Middle and Late Bronze Age temples, palaces, and fortifications, as well as a range of artifacts including cuneiform tablets, ivory objects, a basalt statue of a god, and bronze items like this one. Comes with custom stand. Size: 3.25" W x 4.1" H (8.3 cm x 10.4 cm)

Provenance: Ex-private East coast collection
