Description:

Ancient Near East, Sumeria, ca. 2nd millennium BCE. A fascinating ancient carved limestone face with very deep-set eyes, incised eyebrows and nostrils, and a tiny mouth. Pale yellow and orange pigment is dotted uniformly on the forehead. On the side of the face - which is convex, shaped like a mask, with a hollow back - is a drilled loop, presumably to attach it to a larger figure. This haunting figure may represent a deity or a worshipper; wide eyes are presumed to be a sign of attentiveness to the gods in this culture. It probably once had eyes made of shell or some other reflective material. Similarly, the eyebrows probably had an inlay. Comes with custom stand. Size: 1.5" L x 1.95" W x 2.75" H (3.8 cm x 5 cm x 7 cm); height on stand: 4" (10.2 cm)
