Description:

Ancient South Arabia, Yemen, ca. early 1st millennium BCE. A fine cast-bronze statuette of a standing zebu bull with four stocky legs beneath a bulky body, a hump on the back, a bushy tail wrapped atop the posterior, and a wavy dewlap beneath the neck. The stylized head boasts petite eyes, a short snout with an incised mouth, perky ears, and a pair of attenuated horns projecting on top. Layers of matte patina in green and brown hues coat the surfaces of this fine example. Size: 2.75" L x 0.75" W x 1.5" H (7 cm x 1.9 cm x 3.8 cm).

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Richard Wagner collection, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA, acquired in the 1960s

  • Condition: Repair to front left foot, with light resurfacing and adhesive residue along break lines. (light repatination to back half?) Minor abrasions to body and head, with softening to some finer details, and light encrustations. Great green and brown patina throughout. Old inventory label beneath body.
