Description:

Ancient Near East, Iran, Sialk, ca. 1000 to 700 BCE. This is a strikingly-shaped vessel with a flat base and a single flat strap handle low on the body; the neck flares outward into a flattened rim. Out of one side of the body, the spout rises, up and mostly out, into a shape like a bird's beak - a tapering trough that may have been inspired by bird anatomy. There are rivet-like buttons of clay attached to the joins where the spout meets the rim and the body, which may recall contemporary metal objects like armor. The body is painted a uniform reddish brown; it may have once had dark red painted decorations (for example, see a very similar vessel at the Harvard University Library). Size: 8.25" L x 4" W x 4.6" H (21 cm x 10.2 cm x 11.7 cm)
