Description:

Near East, Sassanian Empire, ca. 500 CE. This is a metallic, shiny piece of hematite with a rounded back and flat base incised with a seated lion and below that a zebu, a taurine animal native to South Asia. The stone has been pierced for suspension and would have been used as a stamp for a seal. The animals chosen probably represent symbols of personal significance to the wearer. Size: 0.4" W x 0.4" H (1 cm x 1 cm)

This seal reminds us of a prominent and influential kingdom that had great influence throughout the Old World after the fall of Rome. Seals bearing animal designs - including birds, stags, lagomorphs, and the types found on this stone - are one of their most enduring symbols.
