Description:

Italy, ca. 3d to 2nd century BCE. Wonderful bronze fragment from a cista - a toiletry box used by wealthy individuals in the bath. Tinned bronze section with opening where handle would have been placed, decorated with incised dotted animals confronting one another beneath a third animal. Repeating heart pattern along base with 5 added bronze elements including twin birds, twin heads of helmeted soldiers and three bronze mail deities, two with loops above their heads where a small chain would have once been suspended. A lovely early bronze! Size: 4.5" W x 6.2" H (11.4 cm x 15.7 cm); 8.25" H (21 cm) on included custom stand.
