Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd Century CE. A lovely lunula, or crescent-shaped pendant, cast from high-quality silver. The thick wire curves elegantly, tapering to rounded tips. Raised granules embellish the length, adding texture and detail, while a loop is securely welded at the center for suspension. The term "lunula" comes from the Latin word lunula, meaning "little moon," and these pendants were popular adornments in ancient Greece and Rome, often crafted in gold or silver. Their shape symbolizes the moon and was associated with lunar deities such as Artemis (Diana) and Selene (Luna), embodying femininity, fertility, and protection. Size: 1.25" L x 1.125" W (3.2 cm x 2.9 cm); silver quality: 92% to 93%; weight: 3.3 grams

Provenance: private London, UK collection; ex-private UK collection, acquired on the German art market prior to 2000
