Description:

Roman, Republic to Imperial Period, ca. 200 BCE to 300 CE. A stunning and wearable necklace strung with 22 lavender hued chalcedony stones and 21 high quality 93.48% to 93.65% gold (equivalent to 22K+) beads! These ancient beads are strung in modern times with a modern hook clasp, the perfect "princess" length that rests elegantly on the collarbone! The dreamy coloration of the semi-opaque chalcedony matched with the gold is very appealing and it is clear why this durable stone was a favorite with ancient jewelers! Size of strand: 17.5" L (44.4 cm); largest stone bead: 0.75" L x 0.5" W (1.9 cm x 1.3 cm); gold quality: 93.48% to 93.65% (equivalent to 22K+); weight: 46.9 grams

Stemming from the Latin term chalcedonius (chalchedonius), the name chalcedony is mentioned in Pliny the Elder's "Naturalis Historia" as a term for a translucent type of Jaspis. In fact the name most likely derives from the town of Chalcedon in Asia Minor. Chalcedony was used as early as the Bronze Age in the Mediterranean. For example, chalcedony seals dating to ca. 1800 BCE have been recovered from the Palace of Knossos on Minoan Crete. In addition, scholars have found that peoples residing along Central Asian trade routes used chalcedony to create pieces that display Greco-Roman influences.
