Description:

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. An elegant gold pendant resembling a bow containing a striped glass bead as the bow string, all strung on a gold strand to be wearable. Featuring 2 bands of opaque black with a stripe of translucent pale yellow, the glass bead is of a slender, ellipsoid form terminating at each end by a conical gold cap and a knob-like finial. The gold wire that forms the arms of the bow wraps around each and then twists at the center forming a suspension loop. The bow may be an allusion to Diana, Greek Artemis, the Roman goddess of wild animals and the hunt. Size of pendant: 1.4" L x 0.8" W (3.6 cm x 2 cm); of strand: 19.75" L (50.2 cm); weight of pendant: 4.1 grams
