Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A large pendant comprised of ancient Roman glass inlaid in a contemporary sterling silver setting, and hung from a cord as a wearable necklace. The setting has a scrolling openwork backing- the pendant could be worn with either side facing outward. The glass surface has a pearlescent purple patina with dark dendritic patterns from reactions to chemicals / minerals in the sediment as the glass aged. Size of pendant: 3" L x 1.3" W (7.6 cm x 3.3 cm); cord: 21" L (53.3 cm); silver quality: 92.5%; weight: 25.7 grams
