Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. One of my favorites, and the colors are perfect for the holiday season! This is a necklace composed of ancient gilded glass beads and an ancient gold wire clasp, expertly restrung to be wearable today. The glass beads are each unique, with their shapes roughly spherical, and range in color from deep, wine red to blackberry. Each also has a wavy, thin white line near its equator. A thin layer of gilt has been applied to each bead, so that some of the surfaces are a deep golden color while the colors of the glass shine through in other places. Each bead sparkles and catches the light in a different way! Length of strand: 17.5" L (44.4 cm); each bead approximately: 0.3" W (0.8 cm)

  • Condition: Beads and clasp are ancient; they have been restrung. Much of the gilt remains. The beads have light deposits and wear commensurate with age but overall are in lovely condition. The clasp is very slightly bent but still functional. Beautiful and wearable!
