Roman, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. Solid 24 karat gold hoop earrings formed from a plain loop with a tightly scrolled terminus and a hook and loop closure. Beautiful golden hue and lovely form. the Romans even invented the "hoop earring" which developed around 300 BCE. Hoop earrings on occasion were ornamented with finials representing animals, Maenads (the intoxicated women also known as Bacchae), slaves, or the Greek god Eros. This pair was fashioned to represent coiling snakes, a popular Roman motif symbolizing immortality. 4.8 grams, 1" L. Provenance: Ex-Private east coast collection, New York, NY.
