Description:

Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A stunning pair of high karat (24 kt) gold earrings, each boasting an elegant design comprised of a hoop with a long and intricately coiled dangler. Believe it or not, the Romans invented the “hoop earring” which developed around 300 BCE. Roman women - especially of the upper classes - adored earrings; jewelry was particularly important to women in Roman society because it was legally their own property, independent of their husband's wealth, and they could use it as they saw fit. Size: hoops measure ~ .875" in diameter (2.2 cm); danglers measure ~ 1.5" L (3.8 cm)
