Description:

Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A matched pair of high karat (both measure 18+) gold earrings made from spiral hair rings, both of a lovely helical design with hammered, flattened termini that culminate in an elegant point. Spirals are among the oldest geometric shapes represented in ancient artwork, dating as far back as the Neolithic period. Roman women, especially wealthy ones, wore elaborate coiffures, and hair rings like the ones used to create these earrings provided a touch of sparkle while simultaneously supporting their fanciful hairdos. Size: .625" in diameter (1.6 cm) Weight: 7.2 grams
