Description:

Late Hellenistic to Roman period & Near East, Holy Land / Judaea , ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. A collection of 6 ancient pottery serving or storage jugs with one or two strap handles and narrow spouts. The brown pitcher is different from the rest and possibly Greek in origin, exhibiting much thinner and delicate walls slipped in a umber brown hue with a serpentine handle - this is the most decorative and perhaps a luxurious vessel used for dining. The rest are more utilitarian and made from a thick terracotta material with visible wheel marks -likely from the eastern Roman Empire and Judaea region. The largest vessel with double handles has a burnished white slip on top of the red clay and incised concentric bands on the shoulder, neck, and handles. Size of largest: 5" Diameter x 7" H (12.7 cm x 17.8 cm)

Provenance: private Bell Buckle, Tennessee, USA collection, by descent, acquired in Tunisia before 1969
