Description:

Ancient Near East, Achaemenid Persian Empire, ca. 500 to 330 BCE. A bronze basin known as a phiale, a special libation bowl used for holding wine, cast with the characteristic squat, flattened body, and flared rim. The center of the basin displays concentric rings, a ring of ovoid petaloid motifs, and an exterior wall of lattice-pattern - all made with repousse and chasing techniques. The corseted shoulder flares outward to form the rim, and the slanted lip enables the drinker to easily sip the contents. Through cultural exchanges, the phiale vessel was widely used in both ancient Greece and Persia, becoming a symbol of opulence during lavish banquets hosted by kings. The vessels were sometimes gifted to esteemed guests as tokens of honor and appreciation. Size: 5.5" Diameter x 1.75" H (14 cm x 4.4 cm)
