Description:

Ancient Near East, Parthian Empire, ca. 3rd century BCE to 3rd century CE. A beautiful pottery pilgrim's flask featuring a traditional lentoid form and a flared spout flanked by arched handles, all enveloped in liberal remains of white glaze. A sparkling iridescence has formed on the glaze, a stunning souvenir from centuries of existence that gracefully complements its elegant form. This distinctive shape of vessel is a copy of a type of leather container shown slung next to cavalry soldiers' saddles on contemporary Palmyrene reliefs and Nabataean figurines. It was also widely produced in plain and glazed ware ceramics in Mesopotamia, used in Iran (e.g. as far as Gurgan and Merv). Size: 1.2" L x 3.7" W x 4.7" H (3 cm x 9.4 cm x 11.9 cm); 5" H (12.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-West Coast, USA collection, acquired in the 1990s
