Description:

Native American, North America, Pacific Northwest, Alaska, Okvik Eskimos, ca. 500 BCE to 100 CE. A petite yet functional harpoon point, hand-carved from mammal bone, perhaps walrus or an ungulate, in the beginning stages of fossilization. The point has a distinctive profile comprised of a projecting tail, a recessed hafting slot flanked by a pair of perforated fastening slits, a central fastening hole, and a bifurcated triangular tip. The top slit on this harpoon head would have likely held a sharpened point fashioned from slate. Secured to the end of a stable pole, this harpoon point would have been invaluable to the ancients occupying the territories which border the Bering Sea. Size: 3.5" L (8.9 cm).
