Description:

Near East, modern day Iran, ca 1st half of the 1st millennium BCE. This is a circular bowl on a rounded base, grooved under the rim and with a finely shaped ring handle and channel spout. The bowl is overall painted with an earthy red iron oxide pigment. Near Eastern deities at this time were thought to live in artistic images placed in cult buildings, and worshippers brought them offerings of food and drink every day in bowls like these. These were "consumed" behind drawn curtains. Size: 9.5" W x 3.45" H (24.1 cm x 8.8 cm).

Provenance: From the estate of a clergyman in the 1960s.
