Description:

Ancient Near East, Syria-Levant, ca. 1700 to 1600 BCE. A solid bronze figure, perhaps representing Shamash, the Near Eastern sun god, seated and holding both hands out, the right hand forming a fist with a perforation between the thumb and forefinger that once held an attribute - perhaps a serpent or scepter. His face is delightfully detailed with thick brows above his ovoid eyes, a prominent nose, closed lips, cup-shaped ears, and a thick beard with cross-hatched patterning to indicate the texture of his facial hair. He wears a headdress with a band that resembles a snake (note the incised snakeskin marks) and a sun disk finial further detailed with an incised "X" and ridged border. The piece resolves in a plug-like lower section, perhaps intended to fit a ritualistic implement. Size: 4.125" H (10.5 cm); 4.625" H (11.7 cm) on included custom stand.
